About
Fiona Varty is a Toronto-based musician, bassist, vocalist, and composer completing her Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto. Performing on both upright and electric bass, she moves fluidly between jazz, rock, singer-songwriter music, and a wide range of improvisational styles, from bebop to free jazz.
As a performer and composer, Fiona draws inspiration from folk traditions and modern jazz, blending these influences into a sound that is distinctly her own. Her original music often incorporates singing while playing upright bass, bringing together melody, harmony, and rhythm.
Beyond performing and composing, Fiona is a dedicated music educator, offering lessons in bass, vocals, guitar, and piano. She is passionate about helping students develop their musicality, confidence, and creativity.
Fiona is the recipient of the 2025 Catherine O’Grady Women in Jazz Award and has received In-Course Scholarships during her studies at the University of Toronto. Through her work as a performer, composer, and teacher, she continues to explore new musical possibilities and contribute to Toronto’s vibrant and diverse music community.
